Christians In Leadership -- Acceptable Sacrifice: What The Bible Has To Say About It PDF Print E-mail
Written by Scott Evans

Happy New Year 2014! I am praying that you are enjoying this New Year and that you are gainfully employed serving our wonderful Lord and Savior Jesus!

At this time of year at our Church we have Faith Fellowship which is an opportunity for us to sacrifice financially for those in the mission field and our sacrificing for the Lord.  We make a commitment and financial pledge to support the missionaries and trust the Lord in supplying the finances.  In many times that means denying self to identify the financial resources.  After all, isn’t that a definition of sacrifice, denying self for others? Jesus tells us that the second greatest commandment is to love each other as we love ourselves.  To love, many times, means to sacrifice.  Loving involves giving of ourselves, or sacrificing of ourselves to one another.  Jesus loved us so much that he made the ultimate sacrifice when he willingly gave himself to us when he died on the cross at Calvary.

Webster’s New Century Dictionary defines sacrifice as: “the surrender of something valuable for the sake of something more important or worthy; loss without return.”  Our servicemen and servicewomen sacrifice themselves by willingly, not being forced, give of themselves to go into harms-way with the risk of injury and death itself, to support and defend our constitution and freedoms we enjoy as citizens of our country.

But the greatest commandment Jesus said was to love God with all of our heart, soul, and strength.  To love God this way, involves sacrifice.  1 Peter 2: 5 tells us that “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” So, that begs the question, what kinds of spiritual sacrifices are acceptable?  Lets list some:

1.  Prayer:  An amazing scene is recorded for us in heaven, for an angel is seen at the altar offering up to God incense mingled with “the prayers of the saints” (Rev 8:4).  Jesus himself prayed and taught us to pray.  We generally pray and think of others much more-so than self.

2.   Giving: This was previously mentioned with the example of giving to the mission field, but well worth restating again. Giving is the use of our financial resources for the furtherance of His kingdom become “an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God” (Philippians 4:18)

3.  Praise: There is a song we used to sing taken from Psalms called “We bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord.”  In some way, not fully comprehended by us, we can “offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.” (Hebrews 13:5).  David tells us in Psalms that we are to come to the court of God with both praise and thanksgiving.

4.  Good work and sharing:But to do good and to communicate (share) forget not; for with such sacrifices God is well pleased” (Hebrews 13:6)  We should never forget that we are saved entirely by God’s grace, but also created specifically unto good works (Ephesians 2:8-10)

Lastly

5.  Ourselves: We have been given a command that we may “present our bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is our reasonable service” (Romans12:1).

So as Christian Leaders, we have a responsibility in sacrificing for those who we lead.  The 5 examples above are ways that we can draw from to sacrifice for those whom God has placed in our charge.  As a young Ensign in the Navy I was taught to care for my people and, in many instances, try to put their needs ahead of my home.  By God’s Grace, I have tried to comply with that in both my military career and in my civilian career.

God is a magnificent God! He can be trusted with our prayers, our resources, our praise, our work, and our lives in how we live our lives, living to Him.  His perfect sacrifice made it possible for our sacrifices to be meaningful!!

If you have not yet accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, won’t you do so today? Paul says today is the day of Salvation, now is the accepted time.

Christians In Leadership -- What The Bible Says That You Can Do To Change To World PDF Print E-mail
Written by Lynn Petersen
Tuesday, 24 December 2013 00:32

Merry CHRISTmas to you and yours!  Jesus, is the reason for this season, this season of giving.  He is the perfect gift, given by God!

Depending on how old you are, the world today is not the same world as it was when you or I were a youth, not even the same as a decade ago, or even four years ago.  In many ways, I believe our world, and country in particular is going in the wrong direction, on many fronts, to include economics, morals, values and most importantly, on a spiritual front.  God’s Word, The Bible, however, gives us hope that there are things that can be done to change the world and make an impact in the environment in which we live.  It is commonly said in the secular world today that if you want change, then be the change.  I submit, that without first changing our hearts, and that change only comes about when we humble ourselves and accept God’s perfect Gift, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit indwells us, then can real change occur.  In other words, we must first be changed, from the inside out, before we can be the change.  I am reminded of Paul’s words in his second letter to the Corinthians:  “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”  (2 Corinthians 5:17)

So what can we do to change the world?  The Bible gives us several examples and guidance on what we can do.  Most of these examples involve action, so the following action verbs are emphasized.  Lighten, (or be a light), love, preach, teach, encourage, and others.  For sake of time, we will limit the focus to these.

Jesus in his famous Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:14-16) tell us that we are to be the “light of the world.”  Look around you, it is fairly dark out there, and in many instances, getting darker.  Jesus goes on to tell us in Matthew 5:16 to “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your father in heaven.” That light is Christ in us, and our light is to shine to bring glory to God.  We have a world today that wants to take God out of everything.  Friends, if God is gone, there is nothing left.  So we do, more than ever, need to be that light.

In addition to being a light, we need to love, and love unconditionally, which is how God loves us.  John records Jesus’ words in (John 13:34-35):  “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye love one another.” How has God loved us?  Unconditionally!!  He does not put conditions on his love.  Why are we to love?  He commands us to, for one.  But keeping with the message, verse 35 tells us “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples: if ye have love one to another.” Love is one way we can change the world!

We have mentioned to be a light and to love.  We are also to preach!  Who are we to preach to and why?   (Mark 16:15-20) gives that answer.  We are to go into the world and preach the gospel to every creature.  What is the purpose?  In verse 16,  Jesus records “he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” Luke, in (Luke 4:18), also records that we are to preach.  “We are to preach the gospel (Good News) to the poor, …….. and preach deliverance to the captives.” We are to be that voice that can help change the world.

Light, Love, Preach.  I also said Teach.  Many of you reading this are parents, grand-parents, and even great-grandparents. As such, you are leaders in your family.  You have spent your life teaching your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  You have many years of stored experience which has given you wisdom.  A problem today, is not so much with the teaching but with those who listen.  Do not be discouraged, continue to teach.  (Matthew 28:20) tells us that “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.  Amen”

The last way that I am presenting is through encouragement.  This is just as important as the others.  All of us can be an encouragement to each other.  We can by what we say, for sure.  Even more strongly, by what we do!  James reminds us that we can have faith, but faith without works is dead.  These are not works that save us, because there was only one work that could accomplish that, and that was done over 2000 years ago, when the good Lord died on the cross and shed his blood for our sins.  A work of encouragement goes far. My dad use to pick up the newspaper for someone and hand it to them when he went to go visit them.  As a youth, I often wondered why he did that.  Now, being older, I have a better understanding and that was one way my dad, in action, could be an encouragement to someone.  Jesus tells us, whatever you do to the least of these, you have done also to me.  That action of doing involves encouragement.

Lastly, so who overcomes the world?  (1 John 5:4,5) gives us that answer.  “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world:  and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.  Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?”

As Christian leaders we need to take action to make a change we need to first be changed by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.  Once we are changed, we must be a light to the world, we must love, preach the Gospel, teach, and encourage both verbally and in deed.  The military has always had as one of its principles to “praise in public, and when needed, reprimand in private.”  A kind word in public about someone goes a long way.

If you have not yet accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, won’t you do so today? Paul says today is the day of Salvation, now is the accepted time. Ask Jesus for that courage, you have not because you ask not.

Christians In Leadership -- What To Do When You When You Are In Doubt About God PDF Print E-mail
Written by Lynn Petersen
Friday, 22 November 2013 11:32

When we look around at the world today, it is a lot different than it was even 10 years ago.  Morally and spiritually, we have degraded and have gone in a wrong direction, or in a direction that God has said that we should not go!

Many times we pray and when God does not answer our prayers, right away, we ask either 1) Why not God, or even worse, 2) Are you there God?  Let me remind you God is not bounded by time.

The last book of the Old Testament, Malachi, and the first book of the New Testament, Matthew, over 400 years lapsed.  That is a long time, or so it seems.  But when you compare it to what Peter says in 2 Peter 3:8, a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years, like a day with the Lord, it is really only a few hours.

So what can we do when we are in doubt about God?  Consider what God’s word says:

Picking up on the verse after 2 Peter 3:8, Peter tells us in verse 9,  “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” God makes good on his promises.  He gave Noah the rainbow in Genesis after he supernaturally flooded the earth and said that the rainbow is a sign of the covenant or promise that He made with Noah.  Each time we see the rainbow after it rains, we should be reminded of that promise God made to Noah.

Many times we are concerned if we are going to get something to eat or even something to drink.  Jesus tells us in Luke 12:29-31, “And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.  For all these things do the nations of the world seek after:  and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.  But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Many times we don’t have our priorities right.  From what Jesus told us, we should seek God and His righteousness, first and foremost, and all the things we physically are in need, NOT WANT, will be provided.

We doubt God sometimes because we don’t always know His ways.  Let me remind you of what the prophet Isaiah said Isaiah 55:8-9

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.”

His ways and thoughts are greater than our ways and thoughts.  That does NOT give us reason to doubt!

We can take God’s word to the bank, and have no doubt in doing so.  Again, in Isaiah 46:10, 11 Isaiah reminds us that “My counsel will stand, and I will do all my pleasure:  I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.”

Lastly, after Jesus resurrection he came back to visit with his disciples, Jesus told the Apostle Thomas when he would not believe that it was Jesus returning unless he saw his holes from the nails on the cross.  Jesus said in John 20:26-29: “And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.”  Jesus then responded: “Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” Thomas believed, because he saw!  If Missouri had been a state back then, I am sure Thomas would have been one of their first residents!

“As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those who trust in Him.”  Psalm 18:30

As Christian’s in Leadership, people will be looking to us for answers to questions that they may have.  If we give the impression that we doubt God, how can we bring hope to those who are looking for hope? May I encourage you to be strong in the faith of our Lord Jesus?  Be that light and let your light shine before men that God would receive the Glory.

If you have not yet accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, won’t you do so today? Paul says today is the day of Salvation, now is the accepted time.  Ask Jesus for that courage, He will never fail you! Jesus reminds us, that you have not because you ask not.

Christians In Leadership -- Abiding PDF Print E-mail
Written by Lynn Petersen
Sunday, 27 October 2013 20:00

And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.” (1 John 2:28)

This word “abiding” comes from the Greek (Just like all of the New Testament!) word meno, which is neither a sophisticated word nor a subtle word.  It is used many times in the New Testament.  Why is that?  Why is the word used so much in the New Testament?  Hopefully the meaning of the word will shed some light on this.  Abiding means to “stay” or “remain.”  But it also has a time dependency associated with it.  It is not a temporal, but rather a consistent, permanent, or I would go so far as to say eternal condition.

First, applicable to not just Christian leaders, but Christians in general, as in 1 John 2:28, the Christian Leader is expected to “stay” or abide in a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.  Not a temporary relationship with the Lord after you come to know Him, but rather a permanent or staying kind of relationship. Consider the marriage vows we take. It is our intent that when we get married, that the relationship would be permanent, in fact we say in that vow “till death do us part.”  The relation that the Church, the Bride of Christ, has with Christ is also permanent. So, therefore, it is expected that the relationship that the believer has with the Lord is implying both a permanent and a normal relationship.

Second, we are to abide in Christ so completely that we would be like a branch growing out of the vine thus making “fruit” possible.  (John 15:4-5) Jesus tells us that He is the vine and we are the branch.  We are only going to bear fruit if we receive the power from Him.  We will not bear lasting fruit of our own strength.

Third, we are to continue in His Word so thoroughly that our prayers will be in synchronization with His Will (John 15:7).  Jesus tells us that if we abide in Him and His Words are in us, we will ask, and it will be done.  But note the condition that is put one this.  1) We have to abide in Him and 2) His Words have to be in us.  So many times people ask, well I asked God to do this, and it was not done.  My response to this is 1) Are you abiding in Him and 2) Are His words in you?  If the answer is yes to both and you are being honest, then God will answer in His time. If the answer is no, then it will not be granted.  God is not our sugar daddy, or ATM, someone to go to when it is convenient for us to get what we selfishly desire. Additionally, our behavior will be in synchronization with His commandments (1 John 3:24) through the Holy Spirit which indwells us.

So what are outcomes of this Indwelling, staying, or remaining?

First, the steadfast “dwelling” in Christ promises to produce a confidence in our eternal relationship. If we are confident about where we are going when we leave this world, our communication will reflect that.  We will speak freely about the One who saved us and will one day come again for us.  We will not have a reservedness in our speaking to others about the Lord.  It will be such a burning.  Consider Peter at Pentecost (Acts 2:29) and the disciples received boldness to speak the Word of God (Acts 4:31).  Our plainness of speech (2 Corinthians 3:12) in witnessing sets the stage for our “boldness in the day of judgment” (1 John 4:17)

Second, the lifestyle we live will be reflective of that
, and while we live on earth, our relationship is sanctified in Christ, and is a relationship we will enjoy for eternity.

Lastly, we are reminded by the writer of Hebrews “Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward.  For ye have need of patience, that after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.”  (Hebrews 10:35-36)

In closing how about you
?  Christian Leader, are you abiding in the Lord?  Are you bearing fruit for the kingdom?  No better time to get started than now, but only with the help of the Holy Spirit

Christians In Leadershiip -- Is Anything Too Hard For God PDF Print E-mail
Written by Lynn Petersen
Wednesday, 09 October 2013 20:57

“Is anything too hard for the Lord?  At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.” (Genesis 18:14)

“Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.” (Joshua 1:6)

I wanted to spend some time with you today sharing with you that nothing is too hard for God, but what complements that is courage. If nothing is too hard for God, why then should we have courage?  Courage is another word for faith, and I would like you to think of the word “faith” when I refer to the word courage.

“Is anything too hard for the Lord….” spoken as a rhetorical question from God to Abraham.  You see, he was about to give Abraham’s wife, Sarah, a baby.  If you are not familiar with the story, you would think, well that’s not too hard, we have 7 billion people in the world today.  We know the stork did not bring them here.  True!  But if you are familiar with the story, you will know Sarah is 90 years old.  I don’t know of too many women giving birth at the age of 90, do you? It would take a biological miracle to give birth to a baby as both Abraham and Sarah were well past child producing years in their lives, and God did perform the miracle.

This same rhetorical question was asked of the prophet Jeremiah. “Then came the word of the Lord unto Jeremiah, saying, Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh; is there anything too hard for me? “ (Jeremiah 32:26-27) The One who created all flesh, who raises up kings and puts them down, could surely fulfill His promise to restore Israel to its homeland when the set time was come.  Friday night at our group practice, Alena noticed one of the hymnals open to a song that we used to sing at a church we attended out in Washington State, years ago, called Ah Lord God.  It is a beautiful song.  It sings of God has the one who created the heavens and the earth by his great power.  The chorus takes from Jeremiah stating “nothing is too difficult for thee, nothing is too difficult for thee.” Jeremiah in Jeremiah 32:17 had confessed his faith that nothing is too difficult for God:  “Ah Lord God!  Behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee”

The word translated “hard” in these verses is more commonly rendered “wonderful” or “marvelous” or an equivalent adjective, referring usually to something miraculous that could only be accomplished by God.  There is nothing, no thing!, too hard for the Lord.  We are reminded by Peter, in I Peter 5:7, that we are to cast our cares unto the Lord because He cares for us.  But also, because God’s ways our greater than our ways, we should never doubt His word. But that is where the second part of this message comes in, courage!  We read earlier from Joshua.  10 times in the Old Testament that we are to “be strong and of good courage", using the Hebrew word amass, plus another 9 times using a different word chasaq.

Today we need good courage to face a dangerous world with all its temptations and intimidations, but nothing today could compare to the challenge facing Joshua.  Trying to lead a nondescript multitude of “stiff-necked” desert nomads into a land of giants and walled cities would surely require courage beyond anything we could imagine today.  But Joshua, just like us, had access to invincible resources.  “Be strong and of a good courage,” God told him, “Be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee withersoever thou goes” Joshua 1:9.  I recall a verse both of our children had to memorize in order to receive a Bible at the same church I mentioned earlier, when they were in Sunday school.  Isaiah 41:10 “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” God will help us, there is nothing too big in our lives that courage or faith in Him and his power can overcome.  We are reminded by Paul in Romans:  “If God be for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31.   God did go with Joshua, and performed a miracle by helping him slay the giants and walled cities so that they could take the land that God promised them.  God was with Abraham and Sarah when he gave them a son Isaac.  And we have the same promise today, for “he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.  So that we may boldly say, the Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me” Hebrews 13:5-6.  If you are here today facing troubles, trials and have your own giants in your lives, there is nothing, no nothing too difficult for the Lord.  But it takes faith, faith as small as mustard seed, Jesus said, and you can move mountains.  But we are reminded that if we toil or labor under our own power and own strength, we labor and toil in vain.  WE can do nothing without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

As a Christian Leader, just like Moses, Joshua and Caleb, David, and others, we are not to fear, but rather we are to have courage.  We will be called upon to make decisions that run against the grain of popularity, but nonetheless, they are decisions that “are the right thing to do.”  Like Joshua, Caleb and David, we are going to have those “giants” in our lives that we must face.  We are encouraged by the words in Zechariah 4:6 “This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ saith the LORD of hosts.”

Question, does the Holy Spirit indwell you today.  If so, then you have claimed Christ as your Lord and Savior.  If not, won’t you make that decision today for Christ?  Paul tells us, today is the day of salvation, now is the accepted time.
