Artist: Old Paths Project Title: Right Now Label: Crossroads Producer: Unknown Reviewed By: Scott Evans
It has never been a secret that my favorite style of music is traditional, male quartet music. While I love the trios, the mixed groups and the soloists, there is just something about good, male quartet music that blesses me and brings me hours of enjoyment. The Old Paths is one of those male quartets and their recent project has already rendered several hours of enjoyment for me. My formula for reviewing music is to listen to it a minimum of three times before writing a review. I listen once on my mp3 player while exercising, once in the quiet of my home on my stereo system and once in my car. This project has been in my car for a week straight and I listened to it at least a dozen times! It is that good and let me tell you all about it!
The project begins with an upbeat song titled “Battle Stand.” I believe this is a song written by Sandy Knight and it is a great one. This song asked the question if we are ready for one more battle stand. What a great thought that we will one day fight that final battle and go to Heaven to be with Jesus for all eternity. The tempo slows but the message stays strong as The Old Paths sing “He’s My Song.” This song relates to everyone living for Christ. It reminds us that Christ is our song even when we don’t feel like going on. “Woke Up This Morning” is a fantastic bass performance on a fast-paced song that reminds us that every day we wake up could be the day that Jesus comes back to take us to Heaven. That is an exciting thought if you are a Christian.
The next song on the project is titled “Everlasting Yes.” This song has a beautiful message that the message of Christ never changes. He has risen from the dead and still is alive today interceding for each of His Children. The next song on the project is the old song originally recorded by Heaven Bound titled “I Know My God Can Do It.” I loved hearing this song recorded again and this is one of those songs that I never get past without going back and playing it again and I always wind up singing along before it is over! “I’m Saved” is a wonderful proclamation that I pray everyone reading his review can say. I love the message of this song about the confidence that we can have when we know we are saved. The tempo picks up again with “When It All Started Happening.” The song speaks of that very moment when God returns and how we intend to be there when the celebration begins!
The next song on the project showcased some beautiful harmony from The Old Paths. The song it titled “The Blood On My Hands” and is a beautiful crafted song about the Blood of Jesus and its cleansing power. “God’s Great” is a statement that I doubt any of us would disagree with. This song reminds us of the many good things that God has done in our life and then goes on to proclaim that while God is good, He is actually great! The final song on the project is the titled song of the project. “Right Now” is the title and it reminds the listener that if you believe, God will work a miracle for you in your situation.
The Old Paths are a very talented quartet. This project has ten strong songs and a nice mix between the older songs and newer songs. The production from the folks at Crossroads is top notch as always and the vocal deliveries are first class all the way. My favorite songs from this project are “Woke Up This Morning,” “I Know My God Can Do It” and “He’s My Song.” Really, any one of the songs can speak to you in such a way that it will become a favorite. As I said in opening, I love male quartet singing and this project is some of the finest male quartet singing you will hear anywhere.
