Artist: Gaither Vocal Band
Project Title: Better Day -- DVD Label: Gaither Music Group Producer: Bill Gaither, Barry Jennings, Bill Carter Reviewed By: Scott Evans Purchase this project at: www.junipersquare.com The Gaither Vocal Band has always been amongst my favorite groups but since their reorganization a few months ago they have moved into one of my top three or four groups! The line up of Bill Gaither, Michael English, David Phelps, Wes Hampton and Mark Lowry is an amazing collection of talent and the talent shines through on this DVD. The DVD was recorded at the Majestic Theatre in San Antonio, TX and the DVD is litered with several scenes from that beautiful city. The project gets started with an upbeat song titled "Love Like I'm Leaving." The song features Mark Lowry, Michael English and Wes Hampton on the solo parts and entire group gets this concert off to a rousing start. The next song is one of the songs that got the whole Gaither Homecoming Videos started. Bill tells a great story of Mark Lowry being late to the first Gaither Vocal Band practice and so David Phelps, Michael English and Wes Hampton were singing "Where Could I Go." They sing the song again and it is pure magic! The title song is next and "Better Day" is a great song with a wonderful message that no matter what you are facing today, there will be a better day with Christ. The song leads in with some humor from Mark Lowry and Bill Gaither. It is great to see those two back on stage together! Michael English sings the solos on "Better Day" and the song is simply great. A Bill and Gloria Gaither favorite of mine is next and Bill does a wonderful job on "Go Ask." I have said before that the Gaither Vocal Band has my favorite version of that song that has such a wonderful message.
Larry Gatlin and his wife stopped by the concert to hear the Gaither Vocal Band and Bill and the guys interact with Larry a couple of times in the DVD. There is some great humor leading into the next song and the Gaither Vocal Band shows their vocal prowess as they sing an incredible a cappella version of "Low Down The Chariot." I'm not sure I have ever seen Bill Gaither do a recording without a special guest or two and Jason Crabb is the first guest on this DVD. Jason sings his great song "Somebody Like Me" which reminds us to get involved in serving Jesus! Jason, who apparently filled in for the Gaither Vocal Band, sticks around to sing "Daystar (Shine Down On Me)" with David Phelps and Wes Hampton! What an awesome arrangement and performance on that great song. Mark Lowry and Michael English take the lead on "I Am Loved." At the conclusion of the song Bill Gaither tells a great story of how Gloria Gaither used this song to reach a concert attendee about 20 years ago. I love that song and the story was good too! Mark Lowry comes out next with some comedy. Only Mark can make a motorcycle accident and a broken leg funny! The guys are back to sing a great song made popular by the Imperials several years ago. The title of the song is "I'm Forgiven" and Michael English, David Phelps and Wes Hampton aptly handle the solo parts of this upbeat song. Bill Gaither and Gordon Mote provide some humor as the guys get ready to sing the quartet standard, "Hide Thou Me." David Phelps is featured on that song and does an awesome job. Another special guest is called up to sing next and the Isaacs sing an old song titled "Mama's Teaching Angels How To Sing." Perhaps one of the best performances on the DVD is next. David Phelps, Michael English and the rest of the guys sing the great song "I Believe In A Hill Called Mount Calvary." It is a wonderful performance that the fans will love! The next song was co-written by Larry Gatlin and Bill and Gloria Gaither. Wes Hampton does a wonderful job singing "There's Always A Place At The Table." The song is a beautiful melody and a great message as well. Gloria Gaither, Larry Gatlin, Jason Crabb and the Isaacs all join the Gaither Vocal Band on stage as Mark Lowry takes the lead on the Gaither Vocal Band's huge hit "Loving God Loving Each Other." I love that song and enjoy this version of it. One of my all time favorite songs written by the Gaither's is "The Church Triumphant." The Gaither Vocal Band, along with all of their special guests, sing that next and it is still one awesome song! Michael English sings the verse and Mark Lowry does the speaking part. The rest of the group sings along and the end result is awesome! The final song on the DVD is a reprise of "Better Day." Bill Gaither is a legend in Gospel Music. The guys in this group right now are not far behind. David Phelps, Michael English and Wes Hampton are three top vocalists that can also sing incredible harmony! Mark Lowry can certainly hold his own as a singer and ads a lot with his personality and comedy. This DVD is incredible! The concert is fun and will bless you multimple times too! My favorite songs from the recording are hard to pick but I finally narrowed it down to "The Church Triumphant," "I'm Forgiven" and "Go Ask." I highly recommend this DVD. The production is awesome and the end result is first class in every way. You can purchase this project at our online store at www.junipersquare.com.
